Three and a half decades after their debut in 1975 and seven years after their breakup, De Danann are back. The founding members Alec Finn and Johnny "Ringo" McDonagh, without the violinist with whom Frankie Gavin was established a long battle for the right use of the name of the group, are joined by singer Eleanor Shanley for a round of waltzes around the room. Wonder Waltz is a collection of competent and lively traditional shapes mixed with poignant covers of Paul Brady, Emmylou Harris and Ry Cooder.It may not be groundbreaking stuff, but the performances are uniformly excellent and the whole package adds up to an effortlessly enjoyable session.
