Italy united from the Alps to Sicily is barely 150 years old. Mario Incudine celebrates this centenary and a half with a collection of songs dedicated to one of the Risorgimento’s heroic symbols: Giuseppe Garibaldi. ?He does so by searching within the vast ballad repertoire of his native region, Sicily, for lyrics telling of the feats, sometimes positive, sometimes not, of the hero as recalled by the local population.
The language is simple, direct, and straightforward, and Mario Incudine has set the words to traditional tunes from the various Sicilian provinces.
This highly successful endeavour permits us to live once more, in modern key, the epopee of our forefathers and taste that special artistic spirit which characterises the age-old Sicilian “balladeering” tradition from which Mario Incudine descends.
