Rare and precious are the BIRKIN TREE discographic productions, always very measured and calculated down to the very latest details. It is then well worth paying careful attention when approaching to their latest musical effort, ready to be listened and enjoyed after a seven year break from their previous work 3(Three) (Felmay, 2003). A time not spent in vain, that allowed his group from Liguria to achieve of a new artistic dimension.
In Virginia evident and strong is the interest of BIRKIN TREE in shuffling the genres. If the Irish musical tradition remains the central pillar around which the group organizes their sound, at the same time is clear how that legacy is continuously compared with jazz, classic music and even minimalism. The style-crossing is possible thanks to the quality and sensitivity of each single component of the group, able to face such difficult and brave challenge always at the best. Finding a meeting point between uilleann pipes and the sound of a piano or that of percussions wasn’t easy at all, yet BIRKIN TREE reveal with Virginia how skilful in solving the problem they can be. Traditional tracks undergo a deep metamorphose, each one presenting itself as mini-suites gathering various themes. The arrangements, the improvisations and the inventions do the rest, by transforming the raw material into something new and different. It is fair to daring in saying that BIRKIN TREE are opening with Virginia a new style a brand new road as no term of comparison is available on the musical horizon.
For this production the founder members Daniele Caronna (violin, guitars, bouzouki) and Fabio Rinaudo (uilleann pipes, tin whistle) benefitted the collaboration of Michel Balatti (flute), Devis Longo (piano in three tracks and sax), Dado Sezzi (percussions) and Fabio Vernizzi (piano and keyboards). Two are the very special guests: Irish Martin Hayes (violin) and from Chicago, but with Irish origins, Dennis Cahill (guitar), high class performers that made the tracks The Sheep In The Boat and Birdman literally sizzling. Roberto Perazzoli (piano, accordion and keyboards) performs in a couple of tracks.
