Music of Albanians of Calabria
VDE CD 1340
This CD is the result of a series of recordings from 2009 to 2010, undertaken in the heart of the Italo-Albanian communities of Calabria. It presents a panorama of the poetic-musical tradition of the Arbëreshë, these Albanians who fled the Ottoman conquest at end of the 15th century to take refuge in the South of the peninsula and in Sicily. Songs, polyphonies, a cappella, bagpipe accompaniment (surdulina), tarentellas and other dances make for a rich programme that reflects this singular population in Southern Italy.
