Yesterday’s splendour, today’s nostalgia. Most Jewish-Arab singers were born in the Maghreb. Many of them lived, or still live in France, in decors evoking the 1930s, 40s, 50s or 60s: the years of all creative daring. Whether “Algerian” (René Pérez, Luc Cherki and Maurice El Medioni, as well as the late regretted Reinette, Lili Boniche, Lili Labassi, Alice Fitoussi, Salim Halali, Line Monty and Blond Blond), “Tunisian” (the late regretted El Kahlaoui Tounsi, Cheikh Elafrite, and Raoul Journo), or “Moroccan” (such as the vivacious Raymonde), they either represented or are the survivors of a musical tradition that they shared for centuries with their Muslim fellow-countrymen.
